A traffic stop Wednesday ended up with a man and woman in jail on illegal drug and firearm charges, after North Charleston Police say they found a loaded pistol in the couple's car, and three bags of marijuana hidden inside the woman's underwear.
Police say they stopped a car near Spruill Avenue and Baxter Street Wednesday night for a broken tag light, and smelled a "strong odor of raw marijuana" inside when they approached the vehicle.
The man and woman admitted there was a small amount of marijuana in the car, according to officers, leading to search of the vehicle. Police say there search turned up six grams of loose marijuana in the center console, eight “Xanax” bars in a cigarillo container, and a loaded 9 mm handgun under the driver’s seat.
According to police, both the driver and passenger denied any knowledge of the handgun. but the male passenger claimed the Xanax, and both the man and woman admitted the marijuana was theirs.
But, the discoveries weren't over. A search of the woman driver after she was arrested revealed an additional 59 grams of marijuana in three sandwich bags concealed in her underwear.
Kyasia C. Brown, 21, of Huger, is charged with unlawful carry of a handgun, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and giving false information to police. Police say Brown was also served with an outstanding bench warrant.
Donovan Wright, of North Charleston, was charged with unlawful carry of a handgun, possession of a Schedule IV narcotic and simple possession of marijuana.
Brown and Wright remain in jail at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. Brown's bond has been set at $15,465. Wright's bond is $15,615.
