Two titans of the Woodland Conference met to do battle on the gridiron on a brisk fall night in Week 9 finale of the 2016 season of Badger Max Thursday Night Lights presented by Northwest Surgery Center as Pewaukee and Greenfield vied for the title of Conference Champions on Thursday, October 14th.
The bleachers at Al Trotalli Stadium in Greenfield were brimming with fans from both communities filled with hopes of watching their team take home the 2016 trophy. Members of the local ROTC program proudly presented the Color Guard on behalf of the United States Army, and the ceremonial game ball was delivered by the United States Marine Corps as the crowd enthusiastically honored all members of the U.S. Military Branches.
The local Salvation Army chapter was on site to collect food and monetary donations from the supportive fans, and Echelon MKE Member Jessica Bell was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for her efforts in "Doing the Most Good" as a member of the events committee, volunteer work at area events, and for forming a collaborative effort with Mount Mary University on a new and exciting project for The Salvation Army. Echelon MKE is a young professionals volunteer group committed to mobilizing the next generation of supporters, donors, and volunteers for The Salvation Army.
The Woodland West Division champion Pewaukee Pirates opened the game's scoring midway through the first quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run, adding a 49-yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter to take a commanding 14-0 lead. Minutes later, the Greenfield Hawks regrouped and found end zone green on a 15-yard quarterback scramble. The Hawks would surrender a safety when an errant backwards pass hit the back of the end zone pylon deep in their own territory. They would recover to end the half with a 27-yard screen pass reception for touchdown to keep the game tight heading into half. The Pirates held onto their 16-14 lead at the open of the second half.
The third quarter would be a back-and-forth battle for control of the game, with the only points coming on a Pirates 15-yard touchdown scamper with 7:34 remaining in the period. Pewaukee would keep the pressure coming on the ground, adding a 20-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to take a commanding 30-14 lead. On the ensuing kick-off, Greenfield energized the home crowd with an electrifying 97-yard return for touchdown, and successfully converted a 2-point attempt to make it a 22-30 ballgame. Pewaukee's ability to impose their will with their run game, and Greenfield's inability to get the defense off the field on 3rd downs would be the story of the game as a late 4-yard touchdown run by the Pirates would all but seal the deal with 1:53 left in regulation. The Hawks fought hard, but their 7-yard touchdown reception would not be enough as a failed onside kick with 0:53 on the clock ensured Pewaukee's deserved victory.
FINAL SCORE: Woodland Conference Champion Pewaukee Pirates 37 - Greenfield Hawks 29
