It was a battle for Brookfield supremacy and bragging rights in Week 5 of the 2016 season of Badger Max Thursday Night Lights presented by Northwest Surgery Center as Brookfield East and Brookfield Central met to do battle on the gridiron on Thursday, September 15th. The beautiful fall evening brought with it and revved up crowd, filling the stands on a great night for football. The community came out to proudly put their school spirit on display.
Positivity and reverence were in the air all night. The crowd proudly roared as the color guard was presented by members of the Brookfield Police Department, and the game ball was delivered by the United States Marine Corps before the game, as they and members of the United States Army were also honored during pre-game ceremonies. The local Salvation Army chapter was on hand collecting food and monetary donations from the supportive fans, and dedicated volunteer and student favorite physics teacher, Mr. Michael Mohammed was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for his efforts and contributions to the mission of "Doing the Most Good" in his community.
While the rival teams may have been competing on the field of play, it was clear that Brookfield is truly a community that holds strong bonds among its members and know that a unified front is necessary to fend off the uglier side of things life can throw its way. In a touching display of unity, both student sections participated in a Gold Out, showing support for those in their own ranks and beyond who battle Childhood Cancer.
A pair of their own, students and warriors in their own right, Maggie and Brittany, were recognized during pre-game ceremonies and again at halftime, when they participated in a Q & A session about their personal experiences battling illness. They showed their strength in the face of adversity, and thanked friends, families, and the community in attendance for their support and spoke of the importance in supporting the cause.
On the field, the game was tight early on, as only two blocked PAT attempts separated the tallies after trading pairs of touchdown runs in the first and early second quarters. Central started to break away and never looked back after East's second score of the game. On the ensuing kickoff, the Lancers broke the return down the sideline for a 95-yard touchdown, and closed the half with a 42-yard touchdown reception and 20-yard field goal to take a 29-12 lead over the Spartans into the second half. East failed to regroup in the second half, giving Central short fields to work with on offense throughout the third quarter, leading to 8- and 10-yard touchdown receptions. The Spartans only managed a safety late in the fourth quarter, as the Lancers held onto their commanding lead with ease.
FINAL SCORE: Brookfield Central 43 - Brookfield East 14
