Week eight of the 2017 season of U.S. Cellular Thursday Night Lights presented by Northwest Surgery Center featured a Milwaukee City showdown for the Richardson Conference Title between the Bay View Redcats and the Tigers of Riverside University High School on Thursday, October 5th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages gathered at Historic South Stadium for a Homecoming Edition of fun and football. Members of the United States Army presented the Color Guard, and the eight game of the season got officially underway.
The Salvation Army had barrels on site to collect book donations for their drive (with a goal of collecting 10,000 books) from supportive fans, and they've been answering the call all season long! Whether or not you'll be in attendance at a U.S. Cellular Thursday Night Lights broadcast game this season, you can donate new books to support The Salvation Army's goal of providing area children books this holiday season.
On the field, momentum swung the way of Riverside midway through the first quarter when they intercepted a Bay View pass inside their own 10-yard line. Less than 3 minutes later, the Tigers drew first blood as they found end zone green on an 11-yard run on 4th & 4 to take an early 7-0 lead. Bay View would respond, however, scoring on their own 18-yard touchdown run on their next possession, tying the game at 7-7 after one quarter of play. The Riverside offense would stall and turn the ball over on downs at midfield after losing 14 yards on a 4th & 3 play attempt. Bay View narrowly missed a sure-thing touchdown reception on a drop on the ensuing drive, but would pin the Tigers on their own 2-yard line on a punt. The Redcats defense wasted no time pouncing on Riverside early in their drive, recording a safety to take a 9-7 lead which would stand as the halftime score.
After Riverside's Homecoming festivities at halftime, one lucky fan took the field with a chance to throw three 20-yard passes at a tarp's target on the 50-yard line. Various prize values are represented on the tarp, with a bullseye netting the contestant $5,000 in home renovation package value from Window Depot of Milwaukee. The night's contestant connected for a $500 score, and more fans will get the same opportunity at next week's season finale broadcast!
The second half saw Bay View pull away and shut down the Riverside offense, which couldn't build and maintain any momentum. Their first possession of the half resulted in a turnover on downs on the 50. Bay View would convert on their 4th & 2 attempt, scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run. After converting a 2-point attempt, the Redcats took a 17-7 lead. The Tigers would get a second chance on their next drive after recovering their punt which was touched by a Bay View player, but the Redcat defense turned them away once again.
Bay View started the fourth quarter with a 18-yard touchdown scamper to take a 24-7 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers failed to get a foothold on a comeback attempt, however, losing a fumble on the next drive, and failing to capitalize on a fumble recovery of their own with just over 5 minutes to play. Their final drive attempt resulted in another turnover on downs as Bay View's defense held strong to help spoil Riverside's Homecoming and earn a Conference Title. The Redcats will face Milwaukee Morse-Marshall (defeated Milwaukee King 24-22 on October 6th) in the City Conference Crossover Game for the Outright Title. FINAL: Bay View Redcats 24 - Riverside University HS Tigers 7
