The excitement was high in Lake Country on a damp, but otherwise beautiful fall night of football action in Week 8 of the 2016 season of Badger Max Thursday Night Lights presented by Northwest Surgery Center as Wisconsin Lutheran High School and Oconomowoc collided on the gridiron on Thursday, October 6th.
#OconPride powered the event's energy level as members of both the United States Army and the local Legion presented the Color Guard for the National Anthem, and the ceremonial game ball was delivered by the United States Marine Corps as the crowd honored all members of U.S. Military Branches. The local Salvation Army chapter was on site to collect food and monetary donations from the supportive fans, and the Waukesha Chapter's Facilities Manager, Mike Neiman, was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for his efforts and contributions to the mission of "Doing the Most Good" by recruiting volunteers and aiding first responders during disasters and missing person searches as part of the Emergency Disaster Services Program (interested parties can call 262-547-7367 for more information about how to support the cause). The fans in attendance participated in a Miracle Minute, as students facilitated passing collection buckets through the stands in support of Camp Kesem at UW-Madison. The program is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. Watch their video to learn more HERE.
Coming into the game with an undefeated record, the hosting Raccoons displayed their talents early, finding end zone green via an 18-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and taking in a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. The defense came away with an interception in the first to keep the Vikings at bay. Wisconsin Lutheran would find their footing late in the second quarter, however, putting together two quick scoring drives in the final minutes of the half. 6-yard and 71-yard touchdown runs knotted the score at 14-all heading into the second half of play.
The Vikings would continue to build momentum and a lead after recovering a Raccoon fumble on the opening kick-off of the second half, and finishing the ensuing drive with a 5-yard quarterback keeper touchdown run. The fourth quarter saw a scoring explosion as Wisconsin Lutheran pounded the rock with authority, leading to four touchdown runs. Oconomowoc's efforts to claw back into the game were valiant but fell short as their 28-yard and 7-yard touchdown receptions wouldn't be enough to overcome the Viking's running game, which answered at every call.
FINAL SCORE: Wisconsin Lutheran High School 48 - Oconomowoc 28
