The 2018 season kick-off of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by U.S. Cellular saw Classic Eight and Greater Metro Conferences collide as the Arrowhead Warhawks visited the Hilltoppers of Marquette University High School at Hart Park on Thursday, August 16th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages enjoyed a beautiful summer evening despite a few late evening raindrops.
The Salvation Army and My24 Sports proudly kicked off a season-long food drive campaign to combat local hunger with help from the supportive fans who brought non-perishable food donations to the game. Fans are encouraged to bring donations to any TNL game this season. Whether or not you'll be in attendance at a Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights broadcast game this season, you can make monetary donations or learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting SAMilwaukee.org. Milwaukee County West Corps Soldier Peter Sinv was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for his efforts in "Doing the Most Good" as an active member of the church and volunteer, especially as a red kettle bell ringer during the holiday season.
Members of the United States Army presented the Color Guard, Marquette Senior Christian Spaay opened the festivities with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, and the first game of the season got officially underway.
Marquette's defense came up big early on, causing and recovering a fumble on Arrowhead's 19-yard line to end the opening drive of the game. The offense couldn't capitalize, however, and a bad snap from the punting unit gave the Warhawks the ball back deep in the red zone. Arrowhead would take the opportunity to strike first blood on a 2 yard touchdown run. The Hilltoppers answered on the ensuing possession, finding end zone green on a scamper from the 7-yard line. Costly errors including an interception late in the first quarter, a lost fumble on a 4th & 1 play on their own 4-yard line, and a drive extending penalty in the second quarter hampered the Warhawks. Marquette connected on a 13 yard touchdown reception late in the first half to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.
The Hilltoppers kept the pressure on in the second half, using their punishing ground assault to cross the goal line again early in the third quarter on a 8 yard run. After exchanging punts, Arrowhead fought back and connected on a 29 yard touchdown pass on 4th & 16 to cut the lead to seven heading into the fourth quarter. A costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty stalled Marquette's next drive, leading to a 27 yard field goal and 24-14 lead with just over eight minutes left to play. Arrowhead built some momentum on their possession, but the Hilltoppers' defensive unit caused a fumble with a big hit on the quarterback to essentially seal the game. The ground game pounded the rock and wore down the Warhawks late, leading to a final 4 yard touchdown run with 1:06 remaining. FINAL SCORE: Marquette University HS Hilltoppers 31 - Arrowhead Warhawks 14
