Week three of the 2018 season of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by U.S. Cellular showcased a Southern Lakes showdown as the Badgers of Lake Geneva Badger visited the Waterford Union Wolverines during Parents' Night on Thursday, August 30th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages enjoyed a stellar pre-holiday weekend summer evening perfect for a night of high school football.
The Salvation Army and My24 Sports continued our season-long food drive campaign to combat local hunger with help from the supportive fans who brought non-perishable food donations to the game. Fans are encouraged to bring donations to any TNL game this season. Whether or not you'll be in attendance at a Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights broadcast game this season, you can make monetary donations or learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting SAMilwaukee.org, or by simply texting "TNL" to 41444 (Message & Data Rates may apply). Angela Swinehart, Field Representative for The Salvation Army of Southeastern Wisconsin, was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for her ongoing efforts in spreading The Salvation Army's mission of "Doing the Most Good" throughout the region's communities.
The crowd took a moment to recognize and honor members of the United States Army who were in attendance and presenting the night's Color Guard, Waterford Class of 2016 Alumna Savana Schraeder opened the festivities with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, and the third game of the season was ready to official begin.
After receiving the opening kick-off, Badger's first impressive offensive possession included a 44 yard run on 4th & 1 from their own 49-yard line. Their momentum came to a sudden halt, however, as Waterford caused and recovered a fumble on the 1-yard line. The Wolverines failed to capitalize on the turnover, and the teams traded 3 & out series before the Badgers returned the favor and killed a Waterford campaign with a fumble recovery of their own. Lake Geneva Badger took advantage of their defensive unit's efforts, putting together a lengthy drive heading into the second quarter, converting on a fourth down and two third down possessions to keep the ball in their hands. The drive culminated with a 1 yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper to take a 7-0 lead with 5:19 to play in the half. Waterford responded, using a 70 yard reception to later set up a drive-capping 3 yard touchdown scamper to tie things up at 7-all before halftime.
What once looked like it would be a back-and-forth battle of the trenches would turn into an unanswered 34-point swing in the Wolverines' favor. The big momentum swing came in the form of a botched punt reception by the Badgers, allowing Waterford to recover on Badger's 12-yard line. They scored on a 5 yard touchdown run, but missed the PAT attempt to take a 13-7 lead. After forcing a Badger punt, Waterford scored on a 59 yard touchdown run and followed it with a successful two-point conversion attempt to go up 21-7. The Wolverines' defense added two takeaways to close out the third quarter of play, with the second interception returned 85 yards for a touchdown. The offense added a 15-yard touchdown scamper, but Badger blocked one of the PAT attempts, leaving Waterford with a 34-7 lead heading into the final period of play. To their credit, the Badgers never gave up the fight, finding the end zone twice in the fourth quarter thanks to a 5 yard run and final 2 yard quarterback keeper that ended the game's scoring with 1:20 left on the clock. However, Waterford added their own final scoring strike on a 51 yard touchdown run that kept the game out of reach in this conference battle. FINAL SCORE: Waterford Wolverines 41 - Lake Geneva Badger Badgers 20
