Week four of the 2018 season of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by U.S. Cellular showcased a North Shore Conference showdown as the Slinger Owls visited the Hartford Orioles for a Coaches Versus Cancer Game on Thursday, September 6th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages gathered for a brisk fall night of high school football.
The Salvation Army and My24 Sports continued our season-long food drive campaign to combat local hunger with help from the supportive fans who brought non-perishable food donations to the game. Fans are encouraged to bring donations to any TNL game this season. Whether or not you'll be in attendance at a Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights broadcast game this season, you can make monetary donations or learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting SAMilwaukee.org, or by simply texting "TNL" to 41444 (Message & Data Rates may apply). Angela Swinehart, Field Representative for The Salvation Army of Southeastern Wisconsin, was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for her ongoing efforts in spreading The Salvation Army's mission of "Doing the Most Good" throughout the region's communities.
The crowd took a moment to recognize and honor members of the United States Army who were in attendance, cast members of Hartford High's upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors (David Buhle, Louiza Kuepper, Madeline Hoxworth, and Jacob Loosen) delivered a beautifully harmonic rendition of the National Anthem, and the fourth game of the season was ready to official begin.
Hartford got off to strong start as the defense caused and recovered a Slinger fumble on the opening drive of the game. The Orioles turned the opportunity into the first points of the game thanks to converting a 27 yard field goal attempt. Hartford's defensive unit would keep the pressure on the Owls, this time turning a 55 yard interception return into 6 points. A missed PAT attempt left the score 9-0 after one quarter of play. The start of the second quarter saw the momentum swing Slinger's way as the offense rode a 47 yard reception and 20 yard touchdown run to their first points of the game. The PAT attempt was blocked, leaving the Orioles with a 3 point lead. The Owls' defense created their own takeaway on the Orioles' next drive, using the fumble recovery and a 40 yard pass reception to set up a 5 yard touchdown scamper to take a 13-9 lead. Hartford battled right back, connecting on a 63 yard pass to set up their own touchdown run from the 5-yard line to regain the lead. The Owls lost another fumble to the Orioles' defense with just over 4 minutes to play in the half. Hartford found end zone green on a 4 yard reception on a drive extended twice on 4th down conversions and took a 23-13 lead into the second half.
A stalemate of a third quarter saw a battle of the birds' defensive and special teams units traded shots. Hartford caused two more takeaways and were in control of the second half until a penalty on a fourth down play for Slinger would give the Owls' offense new life with 5 minutes to play in the game. Slinger tried to gain momentum, but a labored final drive failed to shift gears. The Owls converted twice in 4th & long situations to keep the ball in their hands, but stalled out on the Orioles' 5-yard line with a final incompletion in the end zone with :47 on the game clock. FINAL: Hartford Orioles 23 - Slinger Owls 13
