Week five of the 2018 season of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by U.S. Cellular showcased a Midwest Classic Conference showdown as the University School of Milwaukee Wildcats visited the Lake Country Lutheran Lightning on Thursday, September 13th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages gathered for a beautiful fall night of high school football in Lake Country.
The Salvation Army and My24 Sports continued our season-long food drive campaign to combat local hunger with barrels to collect non-perishable food donations at the game. Fans are encouraged to bring donations to any TNL game this season. Whether or not you'll be in attendance at a Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights broadcast game this season, you can make monetary donations or learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting SAMilwaukee.org, or by simply texting "TNL" to 41444 (Message & Data Rates may apply). Waukesha Corps Major Nelson De La Vergne III was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for his ongoing efforts in spreading The Salvation Army's mission of "Doing the Most Good" throughout the region's communities.
The crowd took a moment to recognize and honor members of the United States Army who were in attendance and presented the Color Guard, the Lightning Pep Band performed a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem under the direction of Becky Garlock, and the fifth game of the season was ready to official begin.
The Wildcats started the game with an ambush in the form of a onside kick, which caught the Lightning off-guard. University School couldn't capitalize on their successful execution, however, losing a fumble to Lake Country Lutheran on the third play from scrimmage. The Lightning struck swiftly in the form of a 28 yard touchdown run to take an early 7-0 lead. The Wildcat offence failed to take advantage of their position at midfield after a nice kickoff return and were forced to punt. Lake Country Lutheran quickly drove to find the end zone, with a 52 yard run setting up a 16 yard touchdown reception. University School was still looking for answers late in the first quarter when they coughed up the football a second time, leading to a 4 yard touchdown run by the Lightning and a 21 point deficit for the visitors.
The struggles continued for the Wildcats in the second quarter of play, turning the ball over on down on their own 7-yard line early on. The Lightning turned their defensive stand's momentum and some nifty, tight-rope sideline footwork into a 83 yard touchdown run to make it 28-0.
University School's special teams squad once again turned to trickery, converting on a nice fake punt reception to keep their next drive alive. However, miscommunication and confusion seemed to stall the drive as they incurred a delay of game penalty on 4th & 7, forcing a punt. Lake Country Lutheran closed out the half with a 19 yard touchdown pitch and catch to make it 35-0 heading into halftime.
To their credit, University School never gave up, but the running clock and 35 point deficit proved to be too much to overcome in the second half of play. The defense had a fumble recovery late in the third, but the drive would come screeching to a halt courtesy of a Lightning interception on their own 2-yard line on a Wildcats 1st and Goal play. University School scored their first points of the game shortly after thanks to a safety. They then drove and used a Lake Country penalty and 30 yard quarterback scramble to set up a 2 yard touchdown run with mere minutes left to play. They would fail on their second onside kick attempt of the game, putting the game firmly out of reach. FINAL SCORE: Lake Country Lutheran Lightning 35 - University School of Milwaukee Wildcats 9
