Week seven of the 2018 season of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by U.S. Cellular showcased an inter-divisional showdown from the Milwaukee City Conference as the Riverside University High School Tigers (Richardson Division) visited the Rufus King Generals (Blackbourn Division) on Thursday, September 27th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages gathered for a rainy, overcast fall evening of high school football.
The Salvation Army and My24 Sports continued our season-long food drive campaign to combat local hunger with barrels to collect non-perishable food donations at the game. Fans are encouraged to bring donations to any TNL game this season. Whether or not you'll be in attendance at a Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights broadcast game this season, you can make monetary donations or learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting SAMilwaukee.org, or by simply texting "TNL" to 41444 (Message & Data Rates may apply). Lt. Patricia Williams was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for her ongoing efforts in spreading The Salvation Army's mission of "Doing the Most Good" throughout the region's communities.
The crowd took a moment to recognize and honor members of the United States Army who were in attendance and presented the Color Guard, the Rufus King Band performed a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, and the seventh game of the season was ready to official begin.
Rufus King won the coin toss, but deferred until the second half. The first quarter started the game off in a rather quiet, unassuming way, with the teams ending their first possessions of the game with a turnover on downs and a punt, but Riverside used a 40 yard run on their next possession to set up a 2 yard touchdown run. The Tigers failed to convert on a 2-point attempt, taking a 6-0 lead late in the first period of play. Riverside's defense recovered a Rufus King fumble on their next possession, but the Tigers failed to capitalize.
Momentum would stay with Riverside, as they turned on the heat in the second quarter. The special teams unit of the Tigers blocked a Generals punt, returning it to the Generals' 3 yard-line. They found end zone green via a 3 yard run, but again failed to convert on a 2-point attempt. Staring down a 12-point deficit, Rufus King's next drive stalled, forcing them to punt on 4th & 15. In the closing minutes of the half, Riverside scored on a 8 yard quarterback keeper, this time adding on a successful 2-point conversion, then used an interception to set up another 2 yard touchdown run. A second successful 2-point conversion gave the Tigers a 28-0 lead and put a damper on Rufus King's Homecoming Spirits.
The King Generals struggled to come up with answers to match the Tigers ferocity in the second half. Riverside went up 34-0 thanks to a 2 yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with just over 7 minutes to play in the third, and recovered a snap that went awry on a punt attempt for a touchdown with seconds to play in the quarter. A final 2-point conversion grew the lead to 42 points heading in the final quarter of play. With a running clock in effect, Riverside's special teams earned more points thanks to a 50 yard punt return for a touchdown. The PAT attempt failed, but the lead was insurmountable. Rufus King's best offensive series of the night moved the ball into the red zone thanks to a 62 yard reception, but a sack on 4th & 10 from the 18 yard-line sealed the victory for Riverside. The Richardson Division stood tall in this match-up as the Tigers gleefully played spoilers to the hosting team's Homecoming Crowd in week seven. FINAL SCORE: Riverside University High School Tigers 48 - Rufus King Generals 0
