Week nine of the 2018 season of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by U.S. Cellular showcased a bout for the Woodland Conference Championship between the West Division's New Berlin Eisenhower Lions vs. the East Division's Messwood Greyhounds at Shorewood High School on Thursday, October 11th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages gathered for a damp, bone-chilling fall evening of high school football.
The Salvation Army and My24 Sports completed our season-long food drive campaign to combat local hunger with barrels to collect non-perishable food donations at the game. Fans were encouraged to bring donations to any TNL game this season. Whether or not you've been in attendance at a Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights broadcast game this season, you can make monetary donations or learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting SAMilwaukee.org, or by simply texting "TNL" to 41444 (Message & Data Rates may apply). Milwaukee County Program Coordinator Major Angie Pennington was honored on site and within the on air broadcast for her ongoing efforts in spreading The Salvation Army's mission of "Doing the Most Good" throughout the region's communities.
The crowd took a moment to recognize and honor members of the United States Army who were in attendance and presented the Color Guard as those in attendance honored our Country with the National Anthem, and the ninth and final game of our broadcast season was ready to officially begin.
The hosting Greyhounds of Messwood received the opening kick-off, but failed to get anything going on their first drive and were forced to punt. New Berlin Eisenhower's Lions came out roaring, putting together a four-play scoring drive highlighted by a 30 yard run. They found the end zone for the first points of the game shortly after with a 5 yard touchdown run (PAT) to take a 7-0 lead. After another Messwood punt which saw a return to Messwood's 40 yard-line, the Lions went up 14 thanks to a 25 yard touchdown run. As the first quarter was coming to a close, the Greyhounds recovered mishandled punt return on the Lions' 39 yard-line. They would fail to capitalize, however, turning the ball over on downs on a failed 4th & 9 attempt. The Lions defense completed the 2018 regular season without surrendering a single point to an opponent in the first quarter of play.
The final moments of the first half were eventful, as the Lions returned to the end zone thanks to a 1 yard touchdown reception (PAT) to take a commanding 21-0 lead. Messwood answered with a 39 yard touchdown pass with under 1:00 to play in the half, but missed their point-after attempt, making it 21-6. New Berlin Eisenhower came right back with a 43 yard touchdown pass (PAT) of their own with just :18 on the clock to take a 28-6 lead into the second half.
New Berlin Eisenhower kept the pressure on and dominated the third quarter as Messwood struggled to find ways to gain offensive momentum. The Lions connected on a 20 yard touchdown pass (PAT), but really started to run away with the contest thanks to a 61 yard pick 6 interception return (PAT) to take a 42-6 lead with a quarter to play. In the opening seconds of the fourth, the Lions broke a 75 yard touchdown run, but missed the point-after attempt. Messwood refused to give up, connecting on a 50 yard touchdown pass and 2-point conversion to make it 48-14. With just over three minutes to play, New Berlin Eisenhower added one more score to their tally via a 3 yard quarterback keeper (PAT). On the ensuing kick-off, the Greyhounds were off to the races with a 65 yard return to the 5 yard-line. Messwood punched in a 5 yard touchdown run, but would fail on the 2-point attempt. The Woodland Conference Championship goes to the West Division's Lions of NB Eisenhower. FINAL SCORE: New Berlin Eisenhower Lions 55 - Messwood Greyhounds 20
