Week 3 of the 2020 season of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by Landmark Credit Union saw a Southern Lakes Conference smackdown between the Burlington Demons and the Waterford Union Wolverines on Friday, October 9th. After an offseason of COVID-induced delays and uncertainty for all, the My24 Sports Team is thrilled to be back in the community to showcase our communities' schools and students with our 10th Anniversary season of high school football action.
A special thank you goes out to all of the schools and great community-minded sponsors who work with our team to make the broadcasts a reality each and every week. The condensed 2020 season features a number of special Friday editions of Heiser Auto TNL, including this season kick-off match-up, in order to accommodate everyone's already strained scheduling needs. We are overjoyed to be able to make the adjustments and take the necessary safety precautions to bring these games into the area's homes, especially at a time where in stadium attendance is so limited for the safety of all.
Both teams came firing out of the gates in week 3. Waterford received the opening kick-off and marched down the field, using a 35-yard reception by Ty Johnson and a penalty to give the Wolverines a 1st & Goal from the 9-yard-line two minutes into the game. Burlington's defense held its ground and rebuffed the red zone offense, forcing Waterford to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Ryan Simmert for the first points of the night. Burlington's drive started on their own 34-yard-line after the kick-off return, and they converted on a 3rd & 2 play near midfield to set up their first scoring drive. Quarterback Peyton O'Laughlin connected with Eddie Kasper on a 55-yard touchdown reception, and Ben Graham added the point-after to give the Demons a 7-3 lead early on.
Two timely open field tackles on third down plays and overthrown passes stalled the next couple of drives for both teams, with the defensive units bottling up any chances to build steam by the opposition. With under six minutes to play in the first half, Waterford took possession on their own 21-yard-line. Burlington's Brendan Welka read a Wolverine screen and cut the route for a pick-six. Graham added the PAT to give the Demons a 14-3 lead. The teams traded punts after short 3 & out series, with a sack by Waterford's Casey North leading to great field position with just over two minutes in the half. The Wolverines turned to Ty Johnson once again and rode a trio of catches by the big receiver to get within the 10-yard-line. Logan Martinson threw up a jump ball from 9-yards out and Johnson secured the touchdown grab with :19 to play. After an unsuccessful point-after attempt, the hosting Wolverines took a 5 point deficit into halftime.
During the Cousins Subs Halftime show, Bubon Orthodontics put a spotlight on two elite student athletes achieving accolades both in the classroom and on the field of play. The resumes of Burlington's Ethan Safar and Waterford's Trevor Hancock put them both in the running as the week's nominees to earn a share of $5,000 in scholarship money at the end of the season, courtesy of Bubon Orthodontics.
Back on the field, it was the tale of two halves as Burlington pulled away late. The offensive units sputtered as the defenses tightened up to start the third period of play, leading to two punts from each team to start the second half. Burlington finally broke through thanks to a halfback option that saw Zach Wallace connect with Kyle Hackbarth for 46-yards plus a horse collar penalty to set up First & Goal from the 9. O'Laughlin hooked up with Ethan Safar for a 6-yard touchdown (Graham PAT good) late in the third to put the Demons up 21-9.
Waterford just couldn't find the next gear in the fourth, as three drives ended with turnover on downs after incomplete passes and Johnson dropped a punt after calling for a fair catch. Burlington put the Wolverines away late with a 5-yard touchdown scamper (Graham PAT good) by Zach Wallace and a second pick-six for the defense. This time Danny Kniep secured it on a throw away attempt by Martinson with just over 1:00 to play (Graham PAT good) to seal the victory with an exclamation point for the Demons. FINAL SCORE: Burlington Demons 35 - Waterford Wolverines 9
