Week nine of the 2017 season of U.S. Cellular Thursday Night Lights presented by Northwest Surgery Center once again featured the Woodland Conference Championship as two undefeated titans -- Whitnall and New Berlin Eisenhower High Schools -- clashed on Thursday, October 12th. The My24 Sports Team, our sponsorship partners, and fans of all ages gathered at Frank T. Granger Memorial Field in New Berlin for a Championship Edition of fun and football.
The Salvation Army had barrels on site to collect book donations for their drive (with a goal of collecting 10,000 books) from supportive fans, and they've been answering the call all season long, making significant progress toward achieving the goal of providing area children books this holiday season. Members of the United States Army presented the Color Guard, and the season finale got officially underway.
Eisenhower drew first blood, scoring quickly on their first drive thanks to a 29-yard rushing touchdown. Whitnall's offense stalled out of the gate, ending their night's first series with four straight punts. The Lions would benefit from great field position early on, and the run game was dominant from the get-go. Eisenhower would compile a 21-0 lead by the end of the first period of play thanks to 4 and 2-yard touchdown runs. The second quarter didn't fare any better for Whitnall as they struggled to get back into the game. Eisenhower tacked on a 33-yard field goal and 20-yard touchdown reception before the end of the half, taking a commanding 31-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After Eisenhower's dance and band performances at halftime, two lucky fans took the field with a chance to throw three 20-yard passes at a tarp's target on the 50-yard line. Various prize values are represented on the tarp, with a bullseye netting the contestant $5,000 in home renovation package value from Window Depot of Milwaukee. Unfortunately, neither of the night's contestants connected with the target on any of their attempts, but they still had fun!
The Lions would keep the pressure on the Falcons in the second half, converting on a 4th & 18 to keep a drive alive in Whitnall territory. They would extend the lead to 38 and activate a running clock thanks to a 4-yard quarterback keeper. The Falcons showed fight throughout the game, and would finally find the end zone on a 30-yard pitch and catch with just under 3 minutes left in the third quarter. Eisenhower would respond with a 8-yard touchdown run with :47 seconds left in the quarter to make the score 45-7 heading into the final period of play. The Falcons would drive deep into Lions territory but throw an interception with just under 5 minutes to play. Less than minute later, the Falcons would take the ball back with a pick of their own on the Lions' 20-yard line. A 10-yard touchdown scamper by Whitnall in garbage time would end the scoring with 1:30 left to play as Eisenhower would end their regular season undefeated and undisputed Woodland Conference Champions. FINAL: NB Eisenhower Lions 45 - Whinall Falcons 14
