Following multiple delays and schedule changes for both teams, week 5 of the 2020 season of Heiser Automotive Group Thursday Night Lights presented by Landmark Credit Union saw a last minute non-conference battle featuring the Southeast's Franklin Sabers vs. the Greater Metro's Wauwatosa West Trojans on Friday, October 23rd. After an offseason of COVID-induced delays and uncertainty for all, the My24 Sports Team is thrilled to be back in the community to showcase our communities' schools and students with our 10th Anniversary season of high school football action.

A special thank you goes out to all of the schools and great community-minded sponsors who work with our team to make the broadcasts a reality each and every week. The condensed 2020 season features a number of special Friday editions of Heiser Auto TNL, including this season kick-off match-up, in order to accommodate everyone's already strained scheduling needs. We are overjoyed to be able to make the adjustments and take the necessary safety precautions to bring these games into the area's homes, especially at a time where in stadium attendance is so limited for the safety of all.

The night got off to an inauspicious start for both teams as the first quarter saw multiple penalties, three punts, two three-and-out series, and a turnover on downs after a dropped pass on a 4th & 10 play. The glimmer of hope came in the form of Franklin's second offensive series of the evening that used a 36-yard completion from Quarterback Miles Burkett to Tight End Marko Rajkovic that set the Sabers up just outside of the red zone. The drive ended with whimper thanks to a sack by Wauwatosa West's Alec White and 43-yard field goal attempt by Luke Cool that missed left.

The Sabers broke the stalemate on their next possession early in the second, however, on a drive that rode 12 and 27-yard catches by Wide Receiver Reese Osgood into the end zone. Cool added the point-after to give Franklin a 7-0 lead. The Trojans were steadily moving the ball into Sabers territory, using an Avery Dixon Quarterback Dive to convert on 4th & 1, but a costly penalty on a 3rd & 4 play lead to another punt. Controversy ensued as the kick off the foot of Colin Mullen pinned the Sabers at their own 1 yard-line after his knee clearly touched the ground before the kick and should have marked the play dead at that spot. Franklin's offense spread the ball out and used a well-balanced attack to march down the field in the final minutes of the half. Burkett used his legs to pick up 15-yards and later convert on a 4th & 4 play, Running Back Tanner Rivard ran over defenders en route to picking up 25-yards, and Logan Matthews chipped an 18-yard catch to set the Sabers up deep in Trojans territory. As the final seconds counted down, Burkett connected with Osgood for a 5-yard touchdown strike. Cool's point-after sent Franklin into the half up 14-0.

During the Cousins Subs Halftime show, Bubon Orthodontics put a spotlight on an elite student athlete achieving accolades both in the classroom and on the field of play. The resume of Wauwatosa West's Logan Ertl puts him in the running as the week's nominee to earn a share of $5,000 in scholarship money at the end of the season, courtesy of Bubon Orthodontics.

Franklin opened the second half up with the ball. Instead of expanding on their lead, the Sabers opened the door for Wauwatosa West as a mishandled reverse and subsequent high snap on the punt gave the Trojans the ball in the red zone. Wauwatosa West capitalized on the field position connecting on an unexpected touchdown pass from Dixon to Alec White for 14-yards on 4th & 6. Mullen added the point-after to make it a one score contest early in the third. Franklin counter-punched, using their passing game to fuel an 80-yard scoring drive of their own. Burkett found Osgood for a 25-yard gain as they moved the chains before connecting with WR Dyson Klubertanz to cap the effort with an 18-yard reception for touchdown. Luke Cool's kick was true, giving the Sabers a 21-7 lead with 5:00 to play in the quarter.

Tosa West continued to fight their own self-inflicted wounds via penalties, which plagued them all night. The Trojans turned to their bag of tricks to move the chains after converting a fake punt on 4th & 3 for a 15-yard gain, but the drive later stalled and resulted in an actual punt as the offense just couldn't find its rhythm against the smothering Sabers defense. Wauwatosa West's defense and special teams units did their best to keep them in the game, holding Franklin scoreless throughout the fourth. Another sack by Alec White set up a blocked punt and recovery by the Trojans' Dorian Nelson within the Sabers' 30 yard-line, but penalties pushed them backwards and slammed the window of opportunity shut. Another defensive stop returned the ball to the offense in the closing minutes, but the offense's methodical ground attack wasn't suited to overcome the double-digit deficit late. FINAL SCORE: Franklin Sabers 21 - Wauwatosa West Trojans 7
